what if there was chiffon?
When I was playing with chiffon a couple of weeks ago, I wondered if it would be possible to make a quilt with chiffon windows.
Turns out it is possible.
I made a chiffon sandwich in the same way as before, with some knitting ribbon thread caught between the two layers. It is fixed down with some straight stitching and then a little decorative satin stitching to represent the stems and windblown leaves of reeds. When done, the piece was tacked face down to the back of the silk, so the right side would be showing when I was finished, and then machined around with a straight stitch.
On the right side, very carefully-wish I had appliqué scissors-I cut out the silk “window” without cutting into the chiffon. I left the bottom edge uncut-I have an idea for what to do with the flap of silk. And there was a chiffon aperture allowing a glimpse into what lies behind. In this case, a cutting board. But in my imagination there is a waterland.

Wowzers, Judith… this is verra cool! I love everything about it. There are so many ways you can go with this idea… so, what are you going to do with the bottom flap… hmmm???? ;0)
This is beautiful! I too am wondering what ideas you have for that flap, can’t wait to see!
oh wow – this just keeps getting better and better. your blog is a must read! I love the reeds on the chiffon
So lovely – the idea of a little window is inspired – were those reeds inspired by the fens down my way by any chance?
glad to see the what- iffing thing expanding. this is great! just great coming here.
I really like this – the idea of windows in your quilt loking onto a different landscape is so intriguing. And keeping the flap – that’s making the olld wheels churning here too, giving me ideas…
The luminosity quotient of this piece is off the charts! So many times I come here to silently gawk and simply let the words & images fill me in such a nourishing way …
WOW that is SO beautiful, in execution and in idea! Lovely work!!
I truly appreciate all of your comments.
Silverpebble-the reeds were indeed inspired by the fens at Reach. I found the whole view to the Cathedral at Ely staggering and the light was changing so frequently.
Beautiful! I love the layers and all the different shades of reed/fen green. Windows are always intriguing. I’m experimenting with windows myself but in wood.
