catching up and help needed.

I am feeling wonderfully refreshed by a break at the Shrewsbury Folk Festival-4 days of music and dancing, good food and real ale, noise and excitement and good company-and two days outdoor labour,  harvesting and digging my allotment.

So , where now? A quick round up of things outstanding in my  textile existence, I think.

A browse through my blog reader seems I’ve missed some exciting and thought provoking discussions and some fabulous stitching. I want to reply to many posts I have read, but can’t formulate my thoughts quickly enough for relevance. I will try to address points as they occur in the next few posts.

I have little to show of a stitching nature after my break, but soon will have. I need to be working on Fenland-that’s where my thoughts are right now. That’s a little wheaty detail on the left.  I also want to take part in the crazy quilt what if.  An idea might be taking root, but needs more compost and water yet. I  need the bed where my blue and white quilt is laid out, unfinished, awaiting more stitching, very soon. I must either stitch it or label it so I can put it back together again in the order that seems to work. And in a  fit of madness, I entered my birch quilt into a show and it it will be going on display in a couple of weeks. It needs a label and a hanging sleeve. That is priority one.

So-my question-how do I post a quilt to a show?  Having never entered a quilt show, and probably unlikely ever to do so again- I have no idea how to package a quilt. Are they rolled or folded? In a bag, a tube, a box, a package? If anyone knows the quilt posting  etiquette I would so love some advice. Also- I don’t have fancy labels to sew on the back-how has anyone else done a label?

I want to thank you again for your good wishes for our little trip away and for my birthday. I love this (essentially) sisterhood. And thanks to Marty for the blog Award-just arrived. Check out her slow crazy quilt on the theme of a Midsummer Night’s Dream.

I don’t know if there is a right way of posting a quilt – I have sent small hangings rolled around a tube and then bagged and wrapped. I have made labels either by printing words and a border onto printer-ready fabric or using the lettering on my sewing machine to stitch words onto a small piece of calico – I suspect the latter method will last longer.

you’ve been round to my place, so it comes as no surprise to hear that none of my quilts have ever even heard the word “show”, so i just live vicariously. i’d sure like to see the quilt, too. glad you’re back and feeling rejuved.

Oh, you went to the land of Brother Cadfael!!!!
I’m so glad you had a wonderful trip and a happy birthday, too.

I just mailed off a couple quilts to a show….I rolled tissue paper up to place along the insides of the folds, made sure I had an envelope inside the box with my name and address, put the quilts in plastic bags in case of damp conditions en route, made sure I had insurance and a tracking number, and definitely did NOT mark the box anywhere with the word “quilt”. Boxes have been stolen when the contents are so designated.

Fantastic that you are making your work public!!

You girls are wonderful-thanks for the comments about the quilt and the posting advice. I now know how to pack it.I will show you the whole thing when I get a day with enough light to show it off-you wouldn’t believe the greyness of this August -unless you are English of course. Rumours of sun tomorrow-but only rumours.
Allie-Shrewsbury was lovely again-with plenty of my favourite timber frame buildings too.
