day’s end and treasures from Malawi
The sun has travelled across the sky in a blaze of glory today, largely free of cloud; a golden jewel on a blue ground. In the garden the autumn flowers are blooming, sunset shades of pink, orange, lavender, lilac. The sunset of the year is just beginning.
In the basket are sunset coloured fabrics, brought back from Malawi by my son’s girlfriend, where she worked all summer. These gorgeous cloths are working cloths. They are chitenje-the all purpose 2 metre cloth used by Malawi women for everything. They are worn over skirts as a sarong, alone as a sarong, used to carry children on a mother’s back, to carry shopping, wood, baskets of anything on a head, wrapping the goods and acting as a pad , as headwraps and when too old for any of these or a myriad of other functions, used as wash cloths for bathing children and cleaning cloths. It is said a Malawi woman never leaves home without a chitenje. Truly a woman’s cloth. The patterns and colours are gorgeous. More to follow.
I can find only one informative reference about chitenje here. If anyone knows of others, please let me know.

Aren’t you lucky? What a wonderful gift. The fabrics are very lovely. Any ideas for them yet?
Ooooo – you’ve been playing with the layout!
What yummy fabrics! I love the colours – my favourites are the ferny leaves at the top and the shells … and the cute little fishes. Lucky, lucky you!!!!
Celia
great colours and patterns – they are called by other names in other countries – i can’t think at the moment. but f i recall I will let you know!
They´re beautiful. Don´t let the clothworms get at them (even if they might bring good fortune …)!
What beautiful patterns and colors! Do they always stay within this range of colors or do they go for blues, greens and purples once in awhile?
They’re lovely – I especially like the fishes.
AND my haven’t you been busy with your new layout
they are beyond scrumptious. A lovely color range for the shift in seasons, too.
Marty-there are a whole range of colours, including blues, purples and greens. I was a bit picky with the ones I showed so they matched the Sedum flowers in the garden.
These are beautiful, how lucky you are!
Wonderful fabrics and what a sweet girl to think of you. I’m hoping we’ll be seeing more of these in the winter months to come.. especially with the gardens going into rest!
