When I posted the photograph of the basket full of chitenjes-Malawi wrapping cloths-last week, I was thrilled and enchanted by the colours, although I only posted a few sitting on the top of my basket. Marty asked me if they came in a range of colours, apart from the autumnal rusts and pinks I had shown…

…well, yes they do. Kristie, my son’s girlfriend, spent her summer working in medical centres in rural Malawi. She captured these pictures on a visit to Nkhoma market. (Nkhoma is a small settlement 60km south of the capital, Lilongwe.) If you enlarge the top picture you will see the young woman in charge of the stall wearing a chitenje wrapped over her skirt, with another tied over her shoulders, and a third wrapped around her head.

Beautiful, yes?

(Click all to enlarge, as usual.)
