cutiepie
Just proving I have a lighter side-meet Cutiepie or the Velvet Bird as he is really.
I was given a copy of Maggie Grey/Valerie Campbell Hardings book “Layers of Stitch” as a present, and I have been playing with some ideas from it. Such a luscious source of loveliness and food for many thoughtful pieces still to come.
I fancied making an embellished velvet fabric-it is after all the season for opulent materials. Using black velvet as a base, I applied some bondaweb I had painted in stripes with metallic paints, first cutting the bondaweb into wavy shapes. NOTE TO SELF-Bondaweb doesn’t bondawell to velvet. I have some striped chiffon too and layered that over the velvet and stitched it each side of the stripes. I was going to cut the chiffon back to reveal the painted webbing and in fact did so for one stripe, but the flakiness of the webbing wasn’t all that appealing, so I just cut it back to reveal the velvet.
I hadn’t intended to use the fabric for anything in particular and then I found a pattern at www.spoolsewing.com and I could feel a little tropical bird coming on. I made up the basic pattern and decide to embellish the bird with tail feathers as there was velvet left over. There is a little hand sewing on the wings and beads on his breast too.
I think birds are going to be a bit of an ongoing theme this year. I might use them in other embellishment experiments too. A sort of birdie “What if?”

He looks great! nellies needles has a great bird pattern too.
great! i have a bird quilt on the back burner, maybe you can inspire me a bit to move forward….
I have both patterns. It’s amazing how many variations can be created with such basic shapes—11tybajillion different new species!
I like him, he looks like a soulful creature (crossbreed between raven and hummingbird?) – just a bit too aware of gravity perhaps (but aren´t we all…?)
I love him–he has a sort of shy face that I find charming. I’ve been making birds this year too, but they have very different personalities.
Hi Threadspinner. Sorry to be pedantic but isn’t it Maggie Grey who co wrote with Val?
I love your bird. Maybe I’ll get back to stitching this year. Good luck with the C & G, it seems along time since I did mine, Embroidery as well as Patchwork and Quilting. I was a glutton for punishment, but I did meet a lot of lovely people like Maggie and Val through various textile groups. I think I burned out though and am now more seriously into gardening and have met lovely people like VP.
Of course it is! My head is still hibernating but I have edited it now!
Thanks for stopping by.
Another gorgeous creation! And congratulations for moving to WordPress!! Much improved and now I’ll be able to leave messages, hooray. I may not be able to visit with great regularity but I will surely visit more than before. May 2009 bring you an abundance of creativity!
I’m a big fan of birds..just working on my own for valentines. Didn’t know there was a pattern though!
loooooove your almost peacock-like beauty. The “spool-sewing” pattern is perfect for it. I would be pleased to see your imaginative take on mine. The pattern and construction instructions can be downloaded through my blog.
As soon as I download the pattern I shall experiment with it. Thank you Nellie.
