happy birthday Darwin and Lincoln

What an auspicious day February 12th 1809 was-the birth day of both Charles Darwin, Naturalist, and Abraham Lincoln, President.

My little Darwin inspired piece is coming along  slowly-I should be working on my C & G but I wanted to do this, and I figure life is too short not to chase the hares that offer the greatest sport.

I fixed the little panels to the back of the silk with a very fine machine satin stitch.I use the machine because it gives a firmer finish through the organza. The picture is poor-the light has been a bit dull and this was the best I got.

The piece is then flipped over and I cut away the silk along 3 sides of the bird panel, and used the fourth as a hinge to fold the silk back. You can see where I have tacked the silk panel down along that edge in the picture below.

Even darker picture-done by artificial light-just to show the start of the stitching. I have put a piece of blue silk behind the bird for the photograph to try and show him up, but I am not sure yet what the final colour  will be. I’ve just stated to add some branch details with closely packed running stitch-nothing demanding but potentially very textural.

This isn’t any better-but I quite liked the bouncy flash.

On a completely different note-I saw the most amazing film clip on the BBC yesterday on a programme narrated by David Attenborough about the Arctic. The BBC have put the clip on line today-it takes my breath away and sums up what i think of as wonderful. I think Darwin would have loved this technology too.

Oh yes, weren’t the narwhals amazing! I like the bird experiments – I wonder where they will lead?
