a second bird
I have been meaning to post this for the last couple of days-only each time I started writing something intervened, then I worked on it some more, re-photographed it, didn’t post and here we are today.
This is the upper bird, sitting on a twig. Darwin records, ” I saw the only specimen, which I procured, feeding on the fruit of an opuntia at Maldonado.” (Argentina) In the illustrations of the “Voyage of the Beagle,” it is described as Tanagra darwinii . I can’t find any other images or much information about this species, so this little bird seems to have a uniqueness, almost a fairytale quality, to it.
The bird is painted onto white chiffon, and fixed onto a blue/gold coloured metal/silk organza. The colour shows up well against a piece of gold silk behind the painting. The twigs are darned with different cotton, rayon and silk threads and the leaves are painted bondaweb with stitching for the leaf veins. There is still work to do on three of the leaves, but this is fun.
Spring really feels like it is on its way here. It is nearly 5 o’clock and the sun is still above the horizon, shining gently on the snowdrop flurry in the garden. No daffodils yet, but dozens of buds forming. I love this time of year.

The folds are great, curtaining the bird´s further flight path…. and the leaves…!
this is lovely. I see you are using the same folds of silk, and windows, as the fenland pieces. i like the darker autumn coloured leaves with the lighter bird.
i am just contemplating the garden again, perusing seed catalogues, planting the first seeds. its strange to think our growing season is the same as yours – except while you are waiting for things to warm up Im waiting for them to cool down.
Love these birds!! The leaves, the hole, its fabulous! Beautiful fabric choices.
I figured I enjoyed the fenland series so much I wanted to use it again and see if new possibilities suggested. I’m enjoying the look of darning on metal organza-might be worth exploring further.
Sort of gently capturing it…?
Thanks Karen-the hole, of course, is accidental, but suggestive of a little moth at work!
Another very lovely bird Judith – I’ve really been enjoying watching these develop. I know what yoiu mean – I’m very excited at all the flowering bulbs emerging at the moment – I’m SO glad this winter is nearly over x
Very nice. I really like how you worked in and out of the frame. And those little folds of silk really add a nice dimension.
This is so cool, Judith… I love the folded silk with the branch right over it. Can’t wait to see where this leads you next!
yes, i like the dimension that the window gives and the folding.. well.. seems like spring is unfolding.
i really love the interplay between the leaves and the yellow silk. Your work encourages me to gather some metal organza and see what wants to grow .
Really feels like spring is unfolding too.
